Project Description

Britannia Pier

Britannia Pier, a historic landmark on Great Yarmouth’s scenic seafront since 1901, has long served as a vibrant hub of entertainment, offering live theatre shows, dining options, bars, amusements, and fairground rides.

The proposed development enhanced and modernised the site while respecting its historical character. The improvements include the replacement of existing advertising elements such as billboards, fascia’s, and signage creating a refreshed seafront frontage which takes inspiration from 1920s and 1930s seaside architecture, with features such as zinc clad rounded turrets, raised lettering, and a centrally positioned digital screen.

The existing single storey amusement building has been demolished and replaced with a larger, modern structure featuring a curved roof design that complements the redesigned frontage. These improvements preserve the pier’s coastal charm while introducing modern architectural elements, ensuring Britannia Pier remains a distinctive and valued feature of Great Yarmouth’s seafront.

The second phase of the project will complete the transformation of the pier’s lower frontage, introducing a fully glazed facade for the Pier Tavern alongside a redesigned food kiosk. Both elements incorporate curved forms that reflect the architectural language of the turrets above. Features such as bifold doors and folding shutters allow the units to fully open during the summer months, creating a more dynamic and inviting experience for visitors.
